Designer FAQs: Luxury Recliners
How do I choose a style for my recliner?
You’ll want your recliner to fit in with your space’s style story—whether that’s classic, country, coastal, modern, or something else—and coordinate with other furniture items you have or plan to purchase for your living room, such as your sofa. The rest is up to your vision and personal preference.
- To create a classic aesthetic, you might choose a wingback recliner in a rich brown leather.
- For a more modern look, a club chair recliner in bold fabric will help you make a statement.
- If a casual and coastal vibe sounds more like you, a recliner with a simpler design, tailored with fabric or leather in a light hue, can help set the mood.

What color options do I have that aren’t the classic brown leather recliner?
We love the classics, but we also love something fresh! To start designing your recliner, first consider if you want to match or complement your other furniture. For example, a sofa in a fabulous blue fabric could be accented by a brown leather recliner, or a striking black leather sectional might look even better with a matching recliner. Explore some of our favorite fabric collections for ideas.
We tailor your choice of cozy fabric or butter-soft leather by hand to each piece’s frame. Choose from an array of fabrics in whatever color or pattern suits you, or select your favorite leather from multiple colors and texture options to achieve the right vibe for your space. All of our fabrics and leathers are tested to meet our rigorous quality standards and to ensure years of good looks.
How comfortable are Ethan Allen recliners?
Sporting deep, cushy seats, power reclining options, and luxurious materials, Ethan Allen recliners take comfort to a whole new level. The cushions in our recliners are all made with high-quality, CertiPUR-US® certified foams, helping to prevent body impressions and preserve every cushion’s comfort. Your recliner will be the perfect place to take a break, every time you sit down, for years to come.
Electric power reclining allows for a seamless transition between each of our recliners’ various seating positions. With a gentle push on the arms, your recliner smoothly shifts from seated to reclined to provide the ideal amount of comfort for TV watching and weekend relaxing.
Where should I put my recliner?
Recliners are a common choice for a sitting room, living room, or family room—anywhere that you can imagine kicking back to watch TV or enjoy an afternoon nap. If you think you need a recliner in your bedroom or home office, go for it!
- Recliners look great in a corner, off to the side of a sofa, or facing a TV or fireplace.
- We love having an accent or end table nearby to place drinks, your remote, or whatever else you want to set down while you recline.
- We also love accenting recliners with complementary throws and pillows that add visual interest and extra comfort.

Do I have enough space for my recliner?
Start by measuring your space, then compare the amount of space you have to the dimensions of the recliner you want.
- You’ll need at least 18 inches (depending on the recliner) between the wall and the back of the chair so the seatback doesn't hit the wall when you recline.
- You’ll also need at least 12 inches in front of the chair so that when it’s fully reclined, other people can walk around comfortably.

Can I have a recliner and accent chairs in the same room?
Sure! Mixing and matching recliners and accent chairs is a great way to anchor a large living space—perhaps place these different types of seating on either side of your sofa, facing inward, to create a U-shaped conversation space.
The fabrics, leathers, and colors of your recliner, accent chairs, and sofa don’t even have to match. Again, just choose a single style story—classic, modern, country, or coastal, to name a few—that harmoniously ties every piece together.
